Kap History – Night time train from Toronto to Kap approved in 1962

This week’s Kapuskasing history segment is literally on the tracks. The town received big news that the night time passenger train from Toronto to the Model Town had been approved by Canadian National Railways.

In a story reported in the August 1st 1962 edition of the Northern Times, Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee chairman Robert Walker was thrilled with the announcement and added it concluded the group’s hard work. The new service was to begin October 27 taking passengers from Toronto at 7 pm into Kap at 10:30 the following morning. This eliminated the need for people to be bussed to either to Cochrane or Porquis.

The train featured a sleeping car, dining and liquor lounges, coaches and baggage express car. A special thanks to the Kapuskasing Public Library for ongoing support of this feature.
