Kap History: Business man hoping to open a tavern in the community in 1962

In this week’s history segment a Kapuskasing man’s pledge to get a tavern license and open the first night club between Toronto and Thunder Bay.

The article is from the June 6th, 1962 edition of the Northern Times where Napoleon Boucher wrote a letter to Kap Town Council to get support for the license. Boucher, a former mayor from Hearst had operated the Royal Theatre in Kap for many years. He told council that theatre revenues are declining and wants to turn it into a tavern.

The new business would feature a cocktail bar, and-a dine-and-dance section that can easily be changed over to accommodate banquets, wedding receptions and parties.

Council felt that they shouldn’t be supporting or opposing individual applications but later would write Boucher and tell him that they wouldn’t stand in his way. We appreciate the ongoing support of the Kapuskasing Public Library for our weekly segment.
