Kap History – Circle fountain fundraising

One of the original iconic pieces of the circle in Kapuskasing is the focus of this week’s history feature.

We head to the July 11th 1962 edition of the Northern Times where it’s reported that the Chamber of Commerce was going to help fundraise $1,500 to build a fountain on the circle. Town councillor Jim Ballantyne said in a planning committee meeting that the lack of money in the budget was the prime reason for the delay in the construction.

Representatives from the Chamber were also told that council would do its share provided that other fundraising was done. Original plans for a 30-foot fountain were drawn up more than 10 years, but money earmarked by town council was cut from the final budget.

Chamber president Bill Sheldon says the fountain will be to everyone’s advantage so a fundraising program would be created. We appreciate the support of the Kapuskasing Public Library for our weekly segment.
