Annual OPP reminder about how to drive in the presence of a school bus

Traffic just got a little heavier in the morning and late afternoon, with the return of school buses to the flow.

OPP Const. Michelle Simard reminds drivers to stop for the flashing lights on any bus, even on a four-lane highway, coming from the opposite direction.

And take note that the speed limit is lower in school zones.

“Because we have a lot of kids walking on the sidewalks, crossing streets,” she notes, “also be mindful of crossing guards as well.  All these people are in place to keep our students safe.

The safety of school kids, says Simard, is the point, far above fines and demerit points.

Const. Simard recommends being extra vigilant between seven and 8:30 in the morning and three until five in the afternoon..

A school usually bus goes slowly and stop frequently, so be patient and don’t pass it.

“Just really, really take your time, pay attention to the (bus) signals, always stop in both directions and wait until that stop sign is back in and the flashing lights stop before you proceed.”
