NEOFACS ‘in significant need’ of foster homes

A resource worker with Northeastern Ontario Family and Children’s Services says there’s a significant need for foster families between Hearst and Cobalt.

Joel Van Dyk says regional numbers follow the provincial trend of more than a 30% decline in homes.

“2022-2023 we had a combined between foster homes and kinship and care homes, which follow the same licencing standards, we had 53 homes, compared to approximately ten years prior, 85 homes,” he quotes.

That translates to a high demand for homes.

“We are in significant need for homes,” Van Dyke elaborates, “especially for children with complex needs, sibling groups or older children, 10 years old or older.”

You can inquire by calling NEOFACS (nee-oh-fax). Some answers to your questions might be on the audio of our interview posted below.

In Timmins on Friday between 10:00am and 6:00pm, foster parents and NEOFACS staff will answer your questions during a barbecue and food drive at the Independent Grocer.

Van Dyk says to keep your eyes and ears open in other communities, for similar events in the near future.
