Young Eagles program planned for this Saturday is being rained out, at least for now

About the only thing that could wipe out the Timmins Flying Club’s annual Young Eagles event is weather.  And with the weekend forecast being for rain, Saturday’s planned flights are being postponed.

Every year, kids between eight and 17 get to experience the miracle of flight – most for the first time – making a loop around Timmins from about 28-hundred feet up.

But as coordinator Noel Belair explains, it’s very much weather dependent.

“It’s not something you want to play around with, with young people in the airplanes, especially the newer ones (kids) who have never flown before,” Belair notes. “When you get some turbulence and the rain, it’s just not a good recipe for success by any means.”

As many as 70 kids from across the region, between the ages of eight and 17, were scheduled to experience flight from about 28-hundred feet up. Many of them have never flown.

Belair says a couple new dates are being discussed.

“Last year was phenomenal. It worked out perfect for us. This year, we just have to be patient and wait for that Mother Nature to open up her eyes and give us a little bit of time to get up there and fly the kids around.”

Belair pledges that it will go ahead sometime this summer, or around back-to-school time. Young Eagles who have already registered from across our region are asked to sit tight. You’ll be notified of a rescheduled date.
