Folks are bringing the fight to the doorstep of provincial parliament.
At Queen’s Park today members of the Kashechewan First Nation are demanding the relocation of their community and that immediate action be taken.
Mushkegowuk-James Bay MPP Guy Bourgouin is also holding a press conference today alongside Kashechewan First Nation Chief Leo Friday.
Within it they will discuss how the current state of living is in the community, the current state of emergency that has been declared, as well as the evacuation that is currently underway and the annual flooding issue.
Bourgouin in a press release stated that back on March 31st of 2017, the Tripartite Framework Agreement signed required both the provincial and federal government to address the short, medium and long-term challenges of the First Nation community, including relocation to higher and safer grounds.
The Kashechewan community has been forced to evacuate their homes due to flooding for over a decade, and there has been talk for years now regarding the actual relocation of the entire community to higher ground.
Currently, there are over 550 evacuees residing at this time in both Timmins and Kapuskasing, as well as another 107 so far in Cochrane.
The rally at Queen’s Park begins today at 3:00pm.
