The Town of Kap will be spending just over $8.2 million on capital works projects this year. That includes the resurfacing of a portion of the connecting link from Government Road and Riverside Drive to just past the two bridges.
Mayor Dave Plourde says the original plan was to complete work to Bonnieview Road but it wasn’t in the budget.
“You know our dollar doesn’t take us as far,” he said. “When the budget was passed to do that section of road we thought we could do more but when the tenders came in it didn’t match the budget. We can only do what we can do and that’s unfortunate.”
Plourde noted that Kapuskasing has spent $18 million on connecting link projects in the past, while just $12 million on its own streets.
He adds that why council is continuing to push the province to take back the costs associated with the connecting link.
Plourde says council’s decision to put more money in reserves will benefit in the long run so they won’t have to borrow to fix road and sidewalks.
“On building costs we know our streets and our infrastructure need a lot of work and we are trying to do that without trying to borrow and get into better shape to continue to do that,” he said. “And this allows us to do that so putting more into reserves and putting our we can do and that’s unfortunate.”
