Municipal taxes increase by five per cent in Kapuskasing

After spending extra time debating on a set rate, Kapuskasing Town council finally agreed to a five percent municipal tax levy last night. It means that on a home assessed at $200,000, the increase would be about $250 a year.

Mayor Dave Plourde says the town appears to have its affairs in order.

“I can say now that and I’m hoping that you shouldn’t be seeing the 11 and a quarter that you seen last year anymore,” he said.

Finance committee chairman Martin Dinnissen had originally proposed a four per cent tax increase noting that since the budget was balanced that the town could offer residents a break after the major increase a year ago.

Town water and sewer rates were also set with a six per cent tax increase leaving homeowners with about $350 extra on their bills a year.

“The fixed costs keep going up on us and just to manage the day to day affairs of the municipality the four per cent increase just allows us to pay the bills that are fixed,” he said. “That’s the point we are trying to make to bring up taxes.”

Plourde says OPP costs are up in the air for the next two years and it’s important that the town be ready for that
