A one-time mayor and two-term Timmins city councillor is the federal Liberal party candidate in the April 28th election.

Steve Black was mayor between 2014 and 2018, and was elected councillor in 2022. He announced his candidacy on social media Saturday night.

A mining engineer by trade, he’s facing retired resources executive Gaétan Malette for the Conservatives, and former Moonbeam mayor Nicole Fortier Lévesque for the NDP.

Black ran against longtime incumbent Charlie Angus in 2021 in Timmins James Bay riding, placing third.  Angus is retiring from politics.
