The Kapuskasing Flyers and the Timmins Majors have been bitter rivals over the years and now they’re teaming up for more than just the game this weekend.
The two clubs are travelling to Moosonee and Moose Factory to put on hockey clinics and play two Great North U18 Hockey League games. Flyers Head Coach Alex Plamondon says they’ll head up tomorrow morning on the train and then after lunch it’s all about the youth clinics.
“The Flyers will be in Moosonee for the clinics and the Majors will be in Moose Factory for those clinics so we will kind of be in both communities to run those clinics with youth ages 5 to 14 and up,” he said.
A cultural event and panel discussion are planned for tomorrow followed by the league games later that night and Sunday afternoon believed to be the first ever on the James Bay Coast.
Plamondon says he hopes the players learn that some have less access to the game of hockey than others.
“Different partnerships including with Caisse Alliance, to bring different things like skate laces,” he said. “There’s no sporting goods store up there so we are going to do our best to bring laces tapes and hand those out during the clinics to the players who are down there and want to play hockey.”
The teams will head back on a special train Sunday night and then hit the books as school exams begin on Monday.
