the Elliot Lake Vikings have been granted an immediate leave of absence from the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Commissioner Robert Mazzuca says the decision is due to ongoing delays with the opening of Rogers Arena, formerly Centennial Arena in Elliot Lake. The Vikings have had to call the nearby community of Massey home resulting in increased financial travel costs and not be able to skate and compete on home ice.
The arena in Elliot Lake was due to open later this month but ongoing structural and ground issues have pushed that back even further.
Each team with games against the Vikings on the schedule will be awarded a 1-0 victory.
