Veterinary recruitment committee continues to improve services to animals

The Kapuskasing Veterinary Recruitment and Retention Committee continues to make progress to shore up services for the Cochrane to Hearst area.

Dr. Ramasurian, and Dr, Susan Ramkumar are the only veterinarians in the region and hoping to retire in the near future. Committee chairman Selina Rogers says a clinic for large and small animals could be on the horizon.

“We’re going to be working with our consultants in setting up a proposal and what it looks like to have a satellite clinic here to pursue a mature veterinarian and to keep in contact with the students that are studying right now and to hopefully bring them back home.”

Rogers says it’s a ongoing difficult project to get completed.

“From Timmins or Temiskaming ideally they would be a parent clinic and we would work underneath them,” she said. “So every veterinary clinic needs a medical director so as a committee we cannot set up a clinic so that’s our next steps as a committee to pursue that.”
