The finish line doesn’t appear to be any closer in sight for Extendicare to begin construction of a new long term care facility for Kapuskasing.
At meeting on Monday at the town’s request, mayor Dave Plourde and corporate officials looked over several parcels of land that have to be at least 12 acres in size.
“Lands that we have in our network that would be able to accommodate that and then facilitate further development that would include other house complexes such as a 60 plex or other different housing concepts,” he said.
Plourde wouldn’t elaborate on the locations but one is believed to be in the Val Albert subdivision
He says Extendicare continues to lobby the province for more money to help with rising costs.
“Is the cost of construction so the cost of construction in northern Ontario is upwards of $450 a square foot,” he mentioned “It’s a little less in Southern Ontario but the problem in southern Ontario is the cost of land. The cost of land in Northern Ontario is less expensive which also brings down the cost of construction.”
The license for the current facility in Kapuskasing is up for renewal in January and Plourde says the town is pushing that the only way it gets confirmed is a promise of a construction date in the near future.
