2024 wildfire season a quiet one in Ontario

Wildfire season is over in Ontario, and it was a very quiet 2024.

MNRF fire information officer Evan Lizotte has some numbers.

“There was 480 fires; 262 in the Northeast, 218 in the Northwest,” he states. “So last season in the province, there was 741 wildland fires.”

Lizotte credits widespread spring rainfall and consistent rain events through the summer.

“And as well as human caused fires,” he adds, “you know, people must have been doing a great job in having safe fires and all that, because this season we just didn’t see as much of the activity as we had in the past.”

The slow fire season allowed Ontario to send equipment and crews to help from one side of Canada to the other, and into the United States.

The ministry is now recruiting fire rangers for 2025.  You can apply at www.ontario.ca/fireranger.
