Winter is approaching our region, says Environment Canada meteorologist

The ground and your car might be white as a ghost on the morning after Halloween.

We’re under a weather advisory concerning snowfall overnight.

Environment Canada meteorologist Peter Kimbell says rain will change to snow as the temperature falls while you’re out trick-or-treating.

“It’ll be going downhill below zero at some point this evening,” he says, “and we’ll be winding up with some white stuff on the ground, probably five to 10 centimetres and locally possibly even a little bit more in some areas. Probably not, but it’s possible.”

This will be the first significant snowfall of the season.

“In fact, it’s unusual if you don’t get snow in October,” says Kimbell, adding that the average October gets 15 centimetres of white stuff.

“Even one centimetre in September. So no, it’s not at all unusual to have snow in October and if we eked out the rest of the month without any snow, that would be more of an unusual story.”

Kimbell says he hopes you have your winter tires on your car and adjust to the changing driving conditions, because winter is approaching.
