Kap history — The Model City Mall takes shape

The early beginnings of the Model City Mall is the topic of this week’s Kap history segment.

The December 19th, 1962 edition of the Northern Times has a big front page story about planning and construction of the Mall which started out as a piece of vacant land on Brunetville Road.

The new shopping plaza would house Nadeau Supermarket Limited as its anchor tenant as well as various other businesses. The Nadeau family sold their location on McPherson Avenue to the S.S. Kresge Company to pave the way for the move. It was the third location for the supermarket after originally beginning on the circle back in 1947.

Construction of the Mall would be quick with the official opening planned for Labour Day in 1963.

We appreciate the help and support of the Kapuskasing Public Library with putting together our segment every week.
