Construction is expected to start in the coming weeks on several streets in Kapuskasing that haven’t been touch in many years. Council approved the contract for the reconstruction of King, Birch and Oak Streets. Administrator Guylain Baril says the total cost of the project is about $3.5million.
“This year we will be focusing on getting the underground infrastructure done on both projects,” he said. “That’s water sewer storm pipes fire hydrants and all of that back filling. We will be leaving the three sections on gravel for the winter months.”
Baril says leaving those streets on gravel will help to better compact ground of those routes.
King Street water pipes and sewer are original to the early days of Kapuskasing, while Birch and Oak haven’t had repairs done since the 1950s.
Meantime, engineering work is proceeding on next summer’s connecting link project on Government Road from Riverside Drive to Bonnieview Road. The project is worth an estimated $3.3 million with the province contributing up to three million dollars of the cost.
“But as we know there is a lot of heavy traffic on the highway so it’s a segment of the road that gets lots of beating from the heavy traffic,” he said. “We can expect a lot of shorter life on those segments then we would on a residential street that only sees local traffic.”
