Fire hits Cochrane’s RockShield plywood plant

It took 21 hours from the first calls until the time the Cochrane Fire Department declared a fire at the RockShield plywood plant on the weekend out.

Chief Richard Vallée says 9-1-1  got several calls just before 7:00pm Friday, from neighbours saying they first heard an explosion.  Smoke could be seen all over town.

Expedition Helicopters dropped water onto the flames, as it did at a fire at GreenFirst Forest Products the previous week.  Vallée says his volunteer brigade got help from nine firefighters from Iroquois Falls, and two from Kapuskasing who helped in the overhaul.

The blaze was declared extinguished at 4:00pm Saturday.

The chief says flames were contained to the east end of the mill and did not spread to the rest of the complex.
