In our Kapuskasing history feature this week, a big blaring headline across the front page of the Northern Times on Wednesday, May 23rd, 1962: “Annexation Almost Assured”.
The four-man board of trustees for the Improvement District of Val Albert gave two readings to a bylaw that would approve annexation with the Town of Kapuskasing. Clerk J.J. Trottier said the third and final reading could come at any time. That would set up the merger for the following New Year’s Day.
Adding the 2,650 people of Val Albert would make Kap’s population just under 10,000.
It was expected that West Riverside and Brunetville would be next up, bringing the total population close to 12,500.
Thanks to the Kapuskasing Public Library for its help with our history feature.
