Kapuskasing history: Two police officers hired

This week’s look at Kapuskasing history goes back to the days when the town had its own police force.

The Northern Times of April 18th, 1962 carries a story about council approving the hiring of Larry Beauchamp of Timmins and Raymond Harvey of Kap to be constables.  They were selected form 16 applicants.

To quote the story: “The move to hire two additional policemen came following negotiations with Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company, who had earlier asked Council to provide additional police protection at the mill in return for the payment of one policeman’s salary. In effect, the town is gaining the services of one officer for nothing.”

Our weekly history feature is made possible by the Kapuskasing Public Library sharing its archives with us.
