Evacuees Expected In Mid to Late April

Kapuskasing is preparing for a host of evacuees to come through in late April.

A pre-evacuation meeting between Kapuskasing and host communities such as Hearst, Timmins, Cochrane and Smooth Rock Falls has highlighted an expected date for the beginning of the flooding season.

During the meeting back on March 19th temperatures and snow depths between 1996 and 2006 were compared in order to better try and determine along with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, an outlook for the 2019 ice break-up.

The statistics have pointed to a date of roughly April 21st, however, Environment Canada is calling for warmer than usual temperatures this spring which may have an impact on that presumed date.

The Kashechewan First Nation Deputy Chief has asked that the evacuation begin almost a full week before the breakup of ice begins, so they are able to safely evacuate the community.

Since the meeting, Timmins has passed a motion to host roughly 400 evacuees this year.
