The boat launch may be used for a much more unique purpose in the near future.
Executive Director of the Kapuskasing Indian Friendship Centre Jack Solomon was present at council this week to discuss a new Indigenous Cultural Grounds.
Solomon spoke on behalf of the KIFC on their interest in using the boat launch off of Mitchell and Bonnieview Road as their proposed site.
Kapuskasing Mayor Dave Plourde says the idea has been tossed around for more than a few years within the community.
Plourde says part of the process will be about understanding where the facility is best served.
“It really is just understanding what it is and what its about and where it fits in the community, is it a facility that is best served in what zone and how can we facilitate that happening.”
He also says it is important they find the right spot.
“So its just about picking the right spot, I don’t think its something that you want to, like Ken (Councillor Ken Munnoch) said, put in a place and then find that you have to move it later, I think its about finding the ideal spot and I don’t think we should rush into anything, I think we should do our due diligence to figure out where it belongs and go from there.”
Both parties are interested in using the grounds for attracting tourism, and the grounds can also be used says Solomon as a home for evacuees as well from First Nation reserves.
In theory, the grounds would be able to host 30-50 people in the area at one time.
